Volunteer Opportunities

How would you like to make a difference in a homeless animal’s life by helping and lending your own paws? Volunteers with the Humane Society of the High Plains really do make a difference. Check on any of the activities below you would be interested in, and then give the shelter a call at 625-5252 during open hours.

1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday

1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
Foster Homes:  Occasionally animals need special care after surgery or a traumatic experience. Young animals need care and socialization.  Call the shelter about the details. Both shelter and state license forms must be submitted. The cost is a nominal $10.  Learn More

Transporters:  Do you like driving? Both cats and dogs often need to be moved from one place to another. The majority of transporting is done during the day. Gas expenses are paid.

Events and fundraising:  A lot of volunteers are needed for fundraising and events. The biggies are Soup’R Bowl, held the last Sunday in January, Garage sale and Bake Sale organized by the HSHP employees in June, Leash on Life in September. Equipment needs to be set up and taken down. Tables need to be manned. Posters need to be made and distributed. Also, Any creative or unique ideas that come from your mind are more than welcome.

Maintenance inside and out:  If you are good at fixing things or carpentry, we could use your help. Volunteers also may do windows and pick weeds!

Dog care:  Dogs need to be walked, bathed and played with. If you can help make them prettier and more socialized, they will be more apt to find homes.

Cat care:  Cats need to be brushed, played with and socialized. A cat that is well-groomed and likes people will be more able to find a home.

Public relations:  Look for ways to promote the Humane Society in the community, creatively finding ways to recruit foster homes, find potential adopters, and, yes, if you are a talker, help find sponsorships and items for an event. Book reviews about pet stories like “All My Patients Are Under the Bed” are nice for clubs.

Education: Are you interested in talking to schoolchildren or organizations about pet therapy, pet care, spay/neuter—the topics are endless? Call the shelter.

What qualifications do you need to be a volunteer?

You must be at least 16. Signed parental permission is necessary for 16 and 17 year-olds.

You must care about the animals’ welfare and be compassionate toward them.

You need to submit a completed volunteer form to the shelter.

You need to have a teamwork approach with other volunteers and staff.

You may need to have an “I don’t care if I get dirty” frame of mind.

Any kind of creative ideas are a big plus.

If the above sounds like you, come aboard!
